CASE STUDIES

American Heartland Ice Arena

Black Bear acquired the arena in August 2017 and implemented a capital improvement plan including:
  • Upgraded the fitness equipment, replaced rubber flooring with indoor turf, added an artificial ice surface, and expanded the training footprint of the Heartland Performance Training Gym within the first two months of ownership
  • Refurbish public locker rooms
  • Replace the heated sub-floor underneath the ice surface to improve ice quality 
  • 50+ cosmetic, mechanical, and technology upgrades

Center Ice of Dupage

Black Bear acquired the arena in 2017 and implemented a significant capital improvement plan including replacement of the existing 26-year-old ice plant with a state-of-the-art refrigeration system that will provide quality ice to its customers for the long-term. Other significant projects include:
  • New dehumidification systems
  • Cosmetic renovation of the facility including refurbishing locker rooms and lobby areas 
  • Improve and expand the free Wi-Fi network for guests 
  • Install outdoor LED lighting for customer parking lot and upgrad both rinks to LED lighting 
  • Re-pave and re-stripe customer parking lot
  • 50+ cosmetic, mechanical, and technology upgrades

Ice World

Black Bear invested in numerous capital improvement projects upon acquisition in 2016. Significant improvements included:
  • Replaced arena lights with brighter, energy efficient lighting through a partnership with the local utility company
  • Refurbished all eight locker rooms, public bathrooms and bleachers
  • Upgraded the mechanical equipment including a new cooling tower
  • Replaced broken HVAC units and repaired parking lots and sidewalks

Printscape Arena at
​Southpointe

Black Bear has undertaken numerous projects to improve the facility and improve the customer experience since acquisition in 2017. Projects include:
  • Upgraded fitness equipment in the gym
  • Improved and expanded the free Wi-Fi network 
  • Renovated lobby and adjacent viewing area
  • Developed a facility naming rights partnership with Printscape
  • Partnered with local Pittsburgh radio personality Bubba Snider's "Bubba's Gourmet Burghers" to open a new restaurant overlooking the arena
  • Added a lobby coffee bar to better serve customers
  • Cosmetic upgrade of facility including refurbishment of locker rooms

Piney Orchard

Black Bear invested in significant capital improvements after acquiring the rink in 2016.  Key improvements included:
  • Replaced arena lights with brighter, energy efficient lighting
  • Refurbished all team locker rooms, public bathrooms and bleachers
  • Installed a reflective "Low-E" ceiling to improve efficiency and aesthetics of the arena 
  • Applied a much-needed coat of fresh paint to interior halls and locker rooms
  • Replaced broken HVAC units and repaired parking lots and sidewalks

Seven Bridges Ice Arena

Completed projects include lobby and public restroom refurbishment, parking lot asphalt repair, mechanical upgrades to the refrigeration system and a migration to a customer-friendly online scheduling system. Major projects planned for 2018 include:
  • New dehumidification and HVAC systems
  • Mechanical overhaul of ice-making equipment to ensure our customers have reliable, quality ice
  • 40+ cosmetic, mechanical and technology upgrades

Jersey Shore Arena

Black Bear acquired the arena in 2018 and began a large-scale mechanical equipment overhaul including replacement of the chillers and dehumidifiers. In addition, significant cosmetic  and practical improvements were completed including:
  • Parking lot re-paving and repair
  • Public restroom and locker room renovation
  • New rental skates for beginner skaters and hockey players
  • Plexi-glass replacement to improve spectator viewing

​Ice Land Skating Center

​Black Bear acquired Ice Land in 2018 and immediately replaced a broken dehumidifier to transform the rink's wet and foggy environment into a crisp and clear ice surface. In addition, Black Bear has ongoing cosmetic and amenity improvement projects underway including:
  • Public restroom and locker room renovation
  • Interior repainting
  • Roof and gutter system renovation
  • Parking lot repair
